How to Create a Stunning Step Card using our Free Template

If you're looking for a unique and eye-catching card design, you've come to the right place! This double step card is guaranteed to impress!

Materials You'll Need:

  • Craft cardstock
  • Patterned paper
  • Scissors
  • Bone folder
  • Glue (wet glue or your preferred adhesive)
  • Craft knife and ruler
  • Foam tape
  • Crafty essentials: Sizzix Express Glue, Cosmic Shimmer, or your favorite paper crafting glues
  • Magnetic stamp platform (optional)
  • Anti-static bag (for adhesive cleanup)

Step 1: Preparing Your Template To begin, print out your template and craft cardstock and carefully cut along both the solid and dotted lines. Don't forget to score along the indicated lines as well. This will help create precise folds in your card.

Step 2: Assemble the Card Base Start by folding the middle section of your template, which serves as the central fold for your card. Next, fold the remaining sections accordion-style—forward, backward, forward, and backward—until you achieve the unique step card shape. Use a bone folder to ensure your creases are sharp and well-defined. Your card should fold flat and stand upright beautifully.

Step 3: Adding Patterned Paper Layers Now, it's time to bring your step card to life! Choose your favourite patterned paper and, using the template as a guide, cut out pieces that match the various sections of your card base. These pieces will serve as mats and layers for your card.

Glue these patterned paper pieces onto your card base using your preferred adhesive. Feel free to add extra decorative elements like inked edges, stitching lines, or any other embellishments you desire.

Step 4: Create a Statement Piece To make your card even more striking, add a statement piece that nestles among the card's steps. Lou used the Mariposa layering die set to create a detailed butterfly. Layer the butterfly wings by applying glue to the body, allowing the wings to lift and create dimension. Attach this butterfly to your card, ensuring it stands out prominently.

Step 5: Add a Sentiment Strip For the finishing touch, choose a sentiment and stamp it onto a strip of white cardstock using black ink. Trim the strip to your desired width with a craft knife and ruler. Use foam tape to attach the sentiment to your card, giving it a raised effect.

Feel free to customise your step card further by experimenting with different patterns, colours, and sentiments to suit any occasion or theme!
