Instructions:

Prepare Your Materials: Begin by downloading the exploding box template. This user-friendly template is courtesy of Die Cutting Essentials magazine, issue 94.

Create the Base: Use one colour of cardstock to cut out the base of the box. Attach the template to your cardstock using repositionable glue. Trim around the template without cutting into the dotted lines, which represent score lines.

Score the Base: Use a scoreboard to trace the dotted lines on your template before removing it. These scored lines will guide your folds and form the structure of your box.

Optional Addition of Layers: If you're interested in a more intricate design, consider adding extra layers to your box. Create another base that's slightly smaller than the first and fix it on top.

Create the Lid: Use your second cardstock colour to create the lid. Cut along the template's solid lines, including the small ones at each corner. Score along the dotted lines to guide your folds.

Assemble the Lid: Fold each tab upwards and secure them with glue to create a cube shape.

Assemble the Box: Affix the smaller base directly on top of the initial layer, aligning it with the underlying template. Then, fold both bases upwards for a three-dimensional effect.

Fold the Box: To ensure your box opens easily, fold the score lines back and forth, for better flexibility.

Close the Box: Gather the four edges of the box and tuck them inside the lid. For an added touch, consider tying a ribbon or twine around the box.

Decorate the Panels: The interior panels offer a canvas for creativity! Double-sided paper can add an interesting visual twist. You can also create as many layers as you like, each decreasing in size as they near the center. You can even turn these into tag shapes or add decorative edges.

And there you have it! This versatile exploding gift box is perfect for mini albums or for gifting items like money and gift cards. It's a delightful project that can be personalised for various occasions such as Christmas, birthdays, and anniversaries. Happy crafting!
