Creative DIY Bookend: Step-by-Step Tutorial with Free Template

Materials You'll Need:

  • Cardstock (around 300 GSM)
  • Craft glue or a hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Free bookend template (scroll down for download!)
  • Patterned paper for decoration (optional)
  • Embellishments e.g. metal accents (optional)

Step 1: Printing and Preparing the Template Start by downloading the free bookend template. This template includes all the necessary shapes and measurements for your bookends. You can print it out and use it as a guide for cutting and folding.

Step 2: Cutting and Scoring Using the template, carefully cut out the required pieces from your cardstock. There should be five sheets in total, including the main body of the bookend, the base, the drawer, the drawer wrap, and decorative layers (optional). Make sure to follow the template's guidelines for scoring, as these will be your fold lines.

Step 3: Assembling the Base Begin by assembling the base of your bookend. It's the main support structure for your bookend. Fold and glue the tabs according to the scored lines, creating a sturdy square or rectangle base. If you're using heavyweight cardstock (around 300 GSM), you may not need to add additional layers for support. However, if necessary, you can add extra layers to the base for added stability.

Step 4: Building the Drawer Next, assemble the drawer by folding along the score lines and gluing the tabs together. Ensure the drawer maintains a square shape. This drawer will be used to hold small items or other decorative elements. It's optional, so if you prefer not to include it, you can skip this step.

Step 5: Adding Decorative Layers (Optional) If you want to add decorative layers to your bookend, now is the time to do so. Use patterned paper or other embellishments to enhance the look of the base and sides. You can cut these layers according to the template provided.

Step 6: Attaching the Drawer Wrap Attach the drawer wrap to the drawer itself. Fold the drawer wrap along the score lines and use glue to secure it around the drawer. This step adds a decorative touch to the front of your bookend.

Step 7: Attaching the Drawer to the Base Now, it's time to attach the drawer to the base. Apply glue to the bottom of the drawer and carefully place it onto the base. Make sure it's centered and aligned properly. This drawer is perfect for holding small items or adding extra flair to your bookend.

Step 8: Personalising Your Bookend Feel free to add your own creative touch to the bookend by decorating it with your favorite colours, patterns, or embellishments. You can also attach a decorative pull or handle to the drawer for added convenience and style.

Step 9: Completing the Bookend Allow your bookend to dry completely, ensuring all glue is secure. Once it's dried, your DIY bookend is ready to display proudly on your bookshelf!
