How to Stamp & Colour on Kraft with Coloured Pencils

It’s surprisingly easy to stamp and colour on kraft coloured card stock. Especially with coloured pencils! And no messy white paint is required. We’re using the 12 Days of Christmas stamp set included in Creative Stamping 63 to create this easy stamped and coloured piping mouse Christmas card. It’s a delightful set that’s jam-packed with some amazing animals, festive sentiments, and you can even use these stamps all year! They’re perfect for all-occasion cards.

To colour on kraft all you need to do is first stamp your image in embossing ink to give you a watermarked image. We used Wow! Embossing Ink. Once your ink is dry (heat it with a craft tool to speed up the drying process), colour your entire image with a white pencil. The white colour will act as a base for all your other colours and it really helps when you’re blending your colours as it gives you a smooth colouring surface. We love the Spectrum Noir Colour Blend Pencil Essentials set.

Colour your image with a selection of colours. Using various shades of the same colour will give your image depth, much like alcohol marker colouring. Once you’re done colouring you’ll need to heat emboss your image in white so that your image is crisp and clear. We used the Tim Holtz Stamping platform to help us line up our stamp to our card.

You can try heat embossing in white first and then colouring your image, but we found that when you colour over your embossing with coloured pencil, it’s really hard to remove the colour from the white embossed lines. It’s more effective to colour the watermarked image and then heat emboss in white as the final step.

Another way to colour kraft card stock is to use Distress Oxide Inks. We applied some Lucky Clover on the remainder of the card and look how effective it is! You get some really vibrant colours on Kraft. Distress Oxide inks are a hybrid of pigment and dye ink so you get bright and pigmented colours every time.  These are effective on darker card like kraft or even black or navy. Give it a try!
