How to Clean a Cricut Mat: A Comprehensive Guide

If you're new to cardmaking or papercrafting, you're probably wondering what all the 'die cutting' fuss is about. This extremely versatile technique is a great skill to master, and can be applied to most papercraft projects.
Find out exactly what you need to start your die-cutting journey and master this beautiful cardmaking technique. We will explain all the different kinds of die-cutting machines, types of dies, and give advice on other essentials you will need to begin die-cutting.

What Is Die-Cutting?
Die-cutting is the process of using metal shapes, known as 'dies', to cut out shapes in paper, card, fabric or other similar materials. In cardmaking, this helps you to curate a collection of personalised components to make your design unique and meaningful.
Historically, die cutting was first used in making shoes. More specifically, it was invented for cutting out the leather more efficiently and accurately than by hand. The process has since evolved, and die-cutting is used by many industries, and has a growing popularity within the crafting community.

What is a 'Die'?
A 'die' is a metal outline that is used to create your cut out shapes. This is pressed through a machine known as a die-cutter.
One side of your die is sharper than the other, and so when pressure is applied, it seamlessly cuts out your design, leaving you with a perfect shape of paper, card or fabric. They can be re-used over and over again, giving you identical cut-out pieces, which makes for effortless and professional outcomes whether you're cardmaking or papercrafting, or anything other crafts that you had in mind!
Dies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes - in fact, you'll find a never ending supply of them in craft stores and online with new designs coming out all of the time.
These dies for papercrafting come in all sorts of designs, from flowers and botanical themed dies, to birthday sentiments, balloons, animals, food, toys and everything in between!

What is a Die-Cutting Machine?
In order to create the pressure needed for the metal dies to cut seamlessly, you need a die-cutting machine. You can buy machines in many different shapes and sizes and from lots of crafting brands. There are machines aimed at beginners, right the way through to industrial machines that will cost thousands.
Die cutting is the process of running a metal die cut, plus the material that you want to cut out, through a die-cutting machine.
Die-cutting machines are also used for embossing, where an impression is made rather than a cut.
Find out all about embossing in our Complete Guide to Embossing.

Manual Die-Cutting Machines
A manual die-cutting machine is essentially like a mangle. You create a simple sandwich between the plates and put the die in with the sharp edge face down on the material you want to cut out. Then, you wind the handle manually and the pressure is applied across the whole die, cutting through the card or paper as it passes through, and leaving you with a perfectly cut out finish!
Electronic Die-Cutting Machines
You can also buy die-cutting machines which don't have a handle, whereby the process of cutting is automated. You still need to create the sandwich, but these machines can be great for people who find manual die-cutting hard work on their arms and wrists.
Amongst our favourites are Sizzix, your ultimate creative companion! Perfect for crafters, whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting your artistic journey. With sleek designs and exceptional functionality, the Big Big Shot & Sidekick die cutting machines allow you to effortlessly cut and emboss various materials, from paper and cardstock to fabric and leather. Create stunning cards, scrapbook layouts, home décor, and more with absolute precision and ease. Let your imagination soar as you unlock endless possibilities with Sizzix Big Shot and Sidekick - your must-have crafting essentials!

Computerised Die-Cutting Machines
Computerised die-cutting machines are probably least like die-cutting machines of all. They do not use a die to cut, instead they have a blade which works more like a printer as it moves around the card, paper or fabric cutting out the design. The process is slightly more computerised, but the outcome is more or less the same.

TOP TIP:
To help your dies last longer, try to keep them stored properly when you've finished using them. If they've gotten dirty, give them a good wipe, and ensure that they are fully dry before you put them away to prevent rust. this way, you should be able to reuse your dies over and over again for years to come.
And that's the basics! Now to get started on your die-cutting journey.

Dymo Label Maker

The device can be powered by batteries or connected to a power source, making it ideal for on-the-go crafting.
Unlike the Brother P-Touch, the Dymo Label Maker lacks different font options. However, its simplicity and ease of use, especially when handheld, make it a go-to choice for quick labelling tasks without compromising quality.

Stamping Platform Reviews
Are you in the market for a new stamping platform or thinking about replacing your old one? Crafting enthusiasts know that having a reliable stamping platform is crucial for achieving precise and consistent results. With an array of stamping platforms available on CraftStash, we understand that choosing the right one can be a daunting task. In this post, we'll be comparing two popular options: the Creative Craft Products Stamping Platform and the Tonic Tim Holtz Stamping Platform. We'll break down the comparison into various aspects, including price, size, features, ease of use, and more. So, stay with us till the end to discover which stamping platform comes out on top.
Price:
Let's begin with the price point, a significant factor for many crafters. The Creative Craft Products Stamping Platform is attractively priced at £22.99. If you're a VIP member, you can enjoy a 10% discount, further reducing the cost. Given its affordability, this platform receives a full five-star rating in this category.

On the other hand, the Tonic Tim Holtz Stamping Platform comes in at £25.99. While still reasonably priced, it's a tad more expensive than the Creative Craft Products platform, earning it a four-star rating for its price point.

Size:
The size of your stamping platform is another critical consideration. The Creative Craft Products platform measures 6 by 8 inches, which makes it suitable for various crafting projects. However, compared to the Tonic Tim Holtz, it is a bit smaller. Thus, it gets four stars for its size.
The Tonic Tim Holtz platform, on the other hand, boasts a larger working area at 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, offering more space for your crafting needs. For this, it deserves a full five-star rating in the size category.

Features:
Both of these stamping platforms have some impressive features. One important aspect to note is the presence of a no-border area, allowing you to stamp on larger pieces of cardstock or paper. The Creative Craft Products platform provides three free edges, making it highly versatile and easy to use, earning it a five-star rating.
The Tonic Tim Holtz platform also has a no-border area but with two free edges. While not as extensive as the Creative Craft Products platform, it still performs exceptionally well, warranting a five-star rating.
Furthermore, both platforms have foam nonslip bases that prevent unwanted movement during your crafting process. They also come equipped with full magnetic bases for securing your projects. Each platform's magnetic setup varies slightly. The Creative Craft Products platform includes four magnets with easy-to-handle holders, a feature that many crafters appreciate. Meanwhile, the Tonic Tim Holtz platform's magnets are slimmer, but it's worth noting that they are labeled as fragile. Therefore, the Creative Craft Products platform receives a five-star rating for its magnet setup, while the Tonic Tim Holtz platform earns four stars in this category due to the thinner magnets.

Versatility with Different Stamps:
Both stamping platforms cater to a variety of stamp types, whether rubber or clear. The Tonic Tim Holtz platform clearly indicates which side to use for each type of stamp, which is a user-friendly feature, earning it a full five stars. The Creative Craft Products platform also accommodates various stamp types due to its larger gap, which allows for different stamp depths. It offers the flexibility needed for different crafting projects and receives a full five-star rating in this category.
Clearness of the Plate:
An essential factor when working with stamping platforms is the clarity of the plate. Having a clear plate is essential for accurate stamp placement. The Creative Craft Products platform boasts a clear plate with a prominent grid that's easy to see, even for intricate measurements. This feature, along with the open grid design, makes it highly user-friendly. Thus, it deserves a five-star rating in this category.
Conversely, the Tonic Tim Holtz platform also has a clear plate with a grid, but the smaller, etched grid lines can sometimes distort your view. While it still offers a clear plate, it's not as crystal clear as the Creative Craft Products platform. Therefore, it receives a four-star rating for the clarity of the plate.

Final Scores:
Now that we've evaluated these platforms across various categories, let's tally up the scores. Out of a total of 50 possible stars, the Creative Craft Products Stamping Platform scores an impressive 49 out of 50. It excels in most areas, offering affordability, versatility, and a clear plate for precise stamping.
The Tonic Tim Holtz Stamping Platform, while a strong contender, scores 45 out of 50. It offers excellent value but falls slightly behind in terms of size, clarity of the plate, and a few other features.
Both of these stamping platforms are highly recommended and will serve you well in your crafting projects. The choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. How to Crop Images in Cricut Design Space
Are you starting your Cricut journey and wondering how to crop images in Cricut Design Space? You're in the right place! Cropping images is a fundamental skill that can help you create personalised designs and projects with ease. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of cropping images in Cricut Design Space, making it simple even for those just starting out!
Step 1: Import Your Image
Begin by launching Cricut Design Space and pulling your desired image into the workspace. For this tutorial, we'll be using a basic image of blades of grass, which you can find in downloadable SVG packages or create yourself.

Step 2: Add a Shape
Next, you'll want to add a shape to determine where your image will be cropped. The shape you choose will serve as a guide for the cropping process. While a square works well for most cases, you can also use shapes like triangles or circles for different effects. Enlarge the shape and position it over the area you want to hide or crop in your image.

Step 3: Select Both Images
Click and drag to select both your SVG image and the shape you've added. If you're new to Cricut Design Space, make sure to check out our beginner's tutorial over on YouTube, which covers essential functions like selecting items and grouping.
Step 4: Slice
In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, you'll find the "Slice" button. Click on it, and Cricut Design Space will automatically remove the portion of the image that was concealed by the shape. You'll now have two separate parts: the gray outline (the cropped portion) and the green Blades of grass (the part you want to keep).

Step 5: Delete Unwanted Elements
With both parts selected, hit the "Delete" key on your computer keyboard. This will remove the unwanted portion of the image, leaving you with the cropped version. You can resize this cropped image as needed, making it perfect for projects like diorama cards or intricate designs.

Advanced Cropping Technique: Using Contour

For more complex images that require specific elements to be removed, you can ungroup your image and use the "Contour" feature. This technique is especially useful when you want to extract a particular shape from a complex design.
Highlight and ungroup all elements in your image.
Select the image and click "Contour" in the bottom right-hand corner.

Click on the elements you want to hide or remove from the image. They will disappear as you click on them.
Once you've hidden the unwanted elements, your image will be left with the desired parts only.
Now you can resize, move, and use these elements in your projects.

Welcome to another installment of our series Cricut Joy for Beginners. In this video from Lou Collins, we will focus on an essential aspect of maintaining your Cricut machine - How to Clean a Cricut Mat.
Properly cleaning and caring for your Cricut mat can extend its life, ensuring you get the best cuts possible every time and save money by not having to replace your Cricut mat as often. If your mat has reached the end of it's usefulness then you can find a replacement Cricut mat at CraftStash, with best prices guaranteed.
Cleaning a Cricut mat may seem like a daunting task - how will you get the stickiness back. Fear not, by the end of this guide, you'll be a pro at keeping your mats in top-notch sticky shape. If your Cricut mat doesn't get sticky then you can purchase new mats at the best prices guaranteed from CraftStash - Best Value Cricut Mats

Is your Cricut machine mat looking a little worse for wear? Covered in bits and lost its stickiness? Before you rush off to replace it, we have some tips to share that could help extend its lifespan. This guide will take you through the process of cleaning your Cricut machine mat step by step, ensuring you get the most out of it before it needs replacing.
Why Clean Your Cricut Mat?
A clean mat is essential for clean, sharp cuts. If your paper is slightly moving or you're getting a feathered edge during cutting, cleaning your mat could solve these issues. Dust, pet hair, and paper remnants can significantly reduce the mat's stickiness, causing materials to move about during the cutting process.
Scrape Off the Dirt
The first thing you'll want to do is scrape off as much dirt as possible. You can use any tool with a flat edge for this, such as a mixed media scraper or even the edge of a ruler. The goal here isn't to scratch the adhesive on the mat but to remove the surface dirt. Press down in one direction and then go in the other direction too. You'll notice a lot of dirt and dust being removed, and this alone may increase the stickiness of your mat.

Use a Sticky Lint Roller
If scraping doesn't completely clean your mat or you're not happy with the tackiness, the next step is to use a sticky lint roller. Run it over the surface of your mat to pick up dust and glitter. Remember to roll it in the direction of the grain of the paper, otherwise, you'll end up pulling off the adhesive. If you have a new sheet of sticky on your roller, run it on your clothes first to reduce the tackiness.
Wipe It Down
If there are still bits on your mat that you need to remove, the next stage involves using a wet wipe. However, you don't want just any wet wipe - avoid those with alcohol content as it breaks down the stickiness of the glue on your mat. Instead, use a water-only wet wipe, which you can find in the baby care aisle of most supermarkets.
Rub the wet wipe over the surface of your mat until you're happy that it has picked up as much dirt as possible. Then, let your mat air dry. While your mat is wet, it won't be sticky, but as it dries, the stickiness will return. Be patient and let it air dry naturally - don't try to speed up the process by wiping it down with a towel, as that will just add more fibers to it.
If none of the above work you can try washing your Cricut mat
If your mat is exceptionally dirty, or if it's been a while since its last clean, you will need to wash it. This process involves using warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Avoid using the scouring side of the sponge as it can scratch the surface of the mat and damage the adhesive over time.
Immerse the sponge in the soapy water and start scrubbing your mat, building up a good lather. Work in small circles, focusing on areas with the most wear and tear. Once you're done scrubbing, rinse your mat under a tap and leave it to air dry.

A Few Additional Tips for Clean Cuts
To ensure the cleanest cuts with your Cricut machine, follow these additional tips:
- Check your blade: Always ensure that your blade is free from any small fibres. You can remove the blade from the machine and use tweezers to remove any fibres. Remember not to touch the blade as it is very sharp.
- Use different areas on your mat: It's tempting to always use the top left corner of the mat, particularly with small designs. However, to spread the wear and tear evenly across the mat, try moving your design around on the mat before sending it to cut.
- Choose the correct cardstock and pressure: Make sure you are choosing the correct cardstock for your project and use the least amount of pressure needed to avoid any damage to your mat.

Maintaining Your Mat Post-Cleaning
Once your mat has completely air dried, you'll notice increased stickiness and it will feel like new again. Repeat this cleaning process as necessary. Eventually, there will come a time when you'll need to replace your mat as the adhesive wears down. When that time comes, remember to visit Craft Stash, your go-to source for all your digital cutting machine needs.
Always use the cover that comes with the mat when it's not in use. This practice increases the longevity of your mat, keeps it sticky, and prevents dust and little fibers from sticking to it while it's stored.
So there you have it, a comprehensive guide on 'how to clean a Cricut mat'. By following these steps, you'll extend the life of your mat and ensure optimal performance from your Cricut machine. Understanding the Canvas
The canvas is where you will be designing your project in Cricut Design Space. It's important to understand the different elements of the canvas so that you can create your designs with precision. The canvas is divided into a grid, which allows you to easily align your images and text. You can also change the size of the canvas to suit your project.
Uploading Images
One of the best things about Cricut Design Space is the ability to upload your own images. Whether it's a photo or a custom design, you can easily upload it to the canvas and start working with it. It's important to note that you should only use high-quality images for best results. Once uploaded, you can resize, rotate and edit your image to your heart's content.

Using Layers
Layers are an essential part of Cricut Design Space. They allow you to stack different elements of your design on top of each other, creating a more complex and visually appealing image. You can also manipulate the layers by moving them up or down the layer stack, allowing you to control the placement of each element.
Welding and Attaching
Welding and attaching are two powerful tools in Cricut Design Space that allow you to create more intricate designs. Welding combines two or more shapes into a single image, while attaching keeps two or more shapes together, but maintains their individual properties. These tools can be especially helpful when working with text or creating custom shapes.
Working with Text
Text is a great way to add a personal touch to your designs. Cricut Design Space offers a variety of fonts for you to choose from, but you can also upload your own fonts. Once you've selected your font, you can manipulate it in various ways, including changing the size, spacing and alignment.
Contouring Images
Contouring is another tool that allows you to create unique designs. It allows you to remove certain parts of an image, giving you more control over the final result. This can be particularly useful when working with intricate designs or when you want to create a more subtle effect.

Grouping and Ungrouping
Grouping and ungrouping are two functions that allow you to manipulate multiple elements at once. Grouping combines two or more elements into a single group, while ungrouping separates them back into individual elements. These tools can be especially helpful when working with complex designs.

Using Templates
Templates are pre-designed layouts that you can use as a starting point for your own designs. They can save you time and effort, especially if you're not sure where to start. Cricut Design Space offers a variety of templates for different projects, including cards, banners, and home decor.
By mastering these tips and tricks, you'll be well on your way to creating stunning designs with your Cricut machine. Stay tuned for more advanced techniques in the next section.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

No matter how much experience you have with the Cricut Design Space, don't worry if you run into issues that might slow down your crafting process. The good news is that most of these issues are fixable with a little troubleshooting. In this section, we'll cover the common challenges that users face when using their Cricut machines and offer some helpful solutions. However you may want to read our dedicated blog post to help with very common questions like Why isn't my Cricut Machine working properly and other common issues.
Why is Cricut Not Recognising the Material?
One of the most common issues that users face is the Cricut machine not recognising the material they are trying to cut. This can be frustrating, especially when working on a project with a tight deadline. If you encounter this issue, there are a few things you can do to fix it.
Firstly, make sure that the material is loaded correctly onto the mat. If it is not loaded correctly, the machine will not be able to recognize it. Secondly, check that the material is compatible with the blade you are using. Certain materials require different blades, so it is important to double-check before beginning a project. Finally, make sure that the blade is clean and free from any debris that may be preventing it from cutting the material.
Why is the Design Not Cutting Correctly?
Another common issue is when the design is not cutting correctly. This can be frustrating, especially if the design is intricate or complex. If you encounter this issue, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot it.
Firstly, check that the blade is set to the correct depth. If the blade is too shallow or too deep, it will not be able to cut the material correctly. Secondly, make sure that the material is loaded onto the mat correctly. If it is not loaded correctly, the machine may not be able to cut the design correctly. Finally, check that the machine is set to the correct cutting settings for the material you are using. If the machine is not set correctly, it may not be able to cut the design correctly.

Solving Issues with Mats and Blades
Sometimes, the issue may not be with the material or the design, but rather with the mat or the blade. If you encounter issues with the mat or blade, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot it.
Firstly, check that the mat is clean and free from any debris that may be preventing it from holding the material correctly. Secondly, check that the blade is clean and free from any debris that may be preventing it from cutting the material correctly. If the blade or mat is damaged, it may need to be replaced.
