What Is Papercraft?
Papercraft as an artform transforms very simple sheets of paper into more intricate two or three dimensional creations.
From simple handmade cards to more complex and structural items, there’s a huge range of possibilities for what you can create. Let’s unfold the story of this fascinating craft!
A Rich History Across the Globe
Papercraft has a huge, rich history, that dates back centuries, with roots in various places across the globe.
In Japan, origami has been practiced in its simplest form since around the 1600’s, and has since evolved to the complex art that it is today.
In Europe, the 18th century saw the rise of papercraft in miniature theatre, which was widely enjoyed by adults and children alike.
Modern Papercraft
Modern papercraft has now evolved to encompass a wider variety of techniques, and advances in technologies has made accessibility to high-quality, affordable materials evermore easier for the everyday crafter.
The beauty of papercraft is in its accessibility and the unlikely wonder of its uses.
Basic materials and tools include paper, a cutting tool (scissors or craft knife), and an adhesive such as glue and/or tape.
With just this small selection of resources, you can use techniques such as folding, layering, gluing, cutting and more to achieve the results you want.
This flexibility, as well as the inexpensiveness of it as a material, has allowed papercraft techniques to be more broadly used and loved by crafters around the world.
It’s amazing what you can create using such a humble and cheap material!
